Today I’ll tell you everything you need to know about rollaway beds and give you my thoughts on the best ones I found!

But if you want to check out the best of the best right now, here are my top three products!

My 7 Favorite Rollaway Beds

What are Rollaway Beds?

Have you ever been one of the 3 people sleeping in a 2-person room at a hotel? Well, then you’ve probably seen a rollaway bed or even slept on it.

Also called folding beds, these babies are usually wheeled out when you need an extra bed.

As the two names imply, they can be folded for storage when not in use, and they usually have wheels that allow them to be easily rolled around the house.

They consist of a foldable frame and a folding mattress, some wheels (usually four) and not much more. They can have other parts as well, depending on the type – to find out more about that, keep on reading!

What Types of Rollaway Beds are there?

There are a few different types of rollaway beds and knowing what they’re all about is extremely helpful when you go shopping for them. Here’s a bit of info about each of them.

Standard Type – The type that folds in the middle has four wheels and usually features a metal frame. They are the most common ones and usually don’t cost too much and come in a wide variety of sizes and elevations.

Cabinet Type – As the name implies, these beds resemble a cabinet when folded up. They are usually the largest folding beds available, have wooden frames and cost the most.

These are often the most stable, comfortable rollaway beds available but also the most difficult to move around due to being large and heavy.

Ottoman Type – The smallest and cheapest types, these beds usually fold in thirds and have a metal frame. The wheels are sometimes omitted. It’s far from a full-size rollaway bed, but they can be useful if you don’t have a lot of space and some even take them on trips.

Why Would You Buy a Rollaway Bed?

This is the question everyone asks themselves – why buy a rollaway bed when you can just buy a regular bed? Well, there’s one answer for you already – sometimes, you just aren’t in a position to buy a regular bed.

Rollaway beds are cheaper and take up much less space than a regular bed. So, if you can’t get a regular bed due to budget or space concerns, rollaway beds are ideal for you.

They’re also useful if you need a bed that you can move around the house. Or if you happen to have guests over quite often and need something, they can sleep on.

If you need a portable bed that you can take on trips a rollaway bed is also a good option. It’s much better than sleeping on the floor or the ground, for sure.

How to Find the Ideal Rollaway Bed

Check the Size

The first thing you need to look at is the size of the rollaway bed you’re buying – both when folded up and when spread out.

You need to make sure that you, or whoever will need to sleep on it can fit on the mattress comfortably. You also need to have enough space in the room that you allotted for it.

Check the folded up size too and compare it to the storage space you intended for it.

Make sure to always have a bit more space than the dimensions of the bed when folded up – some of them don’t fold up too well and might take up more space than indicated in the product description.

Besides that, you also check how much weight the bed can support, especially if you intend to have multiple people sleeping on it.

Consider the Materials

The materials that a rollaway bed is made out of are something you should check out straight away, starting with the frame.

If the frame is made out of plastic, you shouldn’t even consider buying the bed – it will probably fall apart quickly. Metal and wood frames, however, are something worth considering.

Metal frames are usually less durable than wood ones, but they have their upsides. Rollaway beds with metal frames can often be folded better, so they take up less space.

Wood frames do last longer though, but they can also be heavier and more cumbersome. They do make less noise though.

The materials the wheels are made of are also important. Purely plastic or purely metal wheels are usually worse than those that include rubber – those will last longer, be quieter and won’t damage your floors.

The material of the mattress is also important, but that’s what I’ll talk about next.

How Good is the Mattress?

Like most other beds, rollaway beds can also come with many different mattress types. Spring mattresses and foam mattresses are the most common ones.

While foam mattresses fold up better, on a bed like this, they usually offer a bit less support than spring mattresses do. Hybrids are available as well, but they’re rare.

Another thing to consider is the way the mattress is built. Some beds come with a foldable mattress, but others have mattresses which are not foldable and need to be stored separately from the frame.

Some beds don’t even have one mattress – they have multiple smaller mattresses or cushions that need to be lined up on the frame. These are good when it comes to storage space, but don’t make for the most comfortable rollaway bed around.

Is It Within Your Price Range?

No matter how good a rollaway bed is, if you can’t afford it, it’s not something you’d want to buy.

Even if it is within your price range, you always have to ask yourself – is it worth the price? If you can possibly get something of similar quality for a lower price, you should go for it.

My 7 Favorite Rollaway Mattresses on Amazon

This bed is ideal for guests who might come over from time to time, and it will surely be able to fit most people.

The size is well-suited even for taller people, who usually have problems fitting onto folding beds. It’s also got a sturdy frame made of metal so it can support a lot of weight.

It comes disassembled, but the assembly process is fairly easy, and the instructions in the manual are straightforward.

When it’s folded up it’s not too big, so you can store it almost anywhere.

It’s significantly more comfortable than most rollaway beds due to the high-quality memory foam mattress that it comes with. However, the mattress does tend to wear out with constant use, so don’t use this is a regular bed.

The wheels are great and it doesn’t weigh too much so moving it around the house is quite easy.

You just can’t lock it in place, so prepare to roll around a bit while sleeping. If you place it in the right spot, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem though.

What do the users say?

Most of the users seem to like it quite a lot and the main point of praise seems to be the high amount of support and comfort that it offers. It seems to be a bit better in those regards than most other rollaway beds.

Something that also receives significant praise is the durability of the bed - it seems to hold up well, even with regular use.

The mattress, however, seems to be a sore point when it comes to durability and it wears out quite quickly.

The other main concern that people seem to have are the wheels - they can’t be locked in the place, so the bed can move around while you’re sleeping on it. Just place it in a spot where that won’t be a huge issue and it seems to perform fine.

  • Taller people will find it quite accommodating
  • It’s more comfortable than most beds of this type
  • Moving it around the house is incredibly easy
  • The metal frame is sturdy and resistant to damage
  • Assembling it is simply a breeze
  • Tends to move around when you sleep on it
  • The mattress wears out quickly
  • Some users reported broken springs after 1st use

This is a great bed which comes in a wide variety of sizes – from cot all the way up to twin XL. I’d personally recommend the largest size since it holds up better than others.

The dimensions of the twin XL are roughly 36 by 78 inches. Good enough for a standard adult person to sleep on, and it should be able to support up to 300 pounds.

The mattress might look thin at first – 1 inch of memory foam and 3 inches of support foam – but it’s fairly comfortable.

Moving this bed around is quite easy since it’s lightweight and the wheels are well made.

The wheels can be locked in place so you won’t be rolling around in your sleep.

The sizes listed in the product description can be a bit deceptive. You’ll need more space than indicated since the legs are quite wide. The mattress comes in Twin, Twin XL and Cot sizes.

When in storage, that’s not an issue, and it takes up little space, making it relatively easy to store.

Specifications

  • Spring-supported deck
  • Comes in three sizes - Cot, Twin and Twin XL
  • 4-inch  memory foam mattress
  • Twin XL takes up 12 by 48 by 34 inches when folded
  • Rayon bamboo cover
  • 10-year warranty
  • Supports up to 300 pounds
  • Metal frame
LUCID Rollaway Folding Guest Bed with 4 Inch Memory Foam Mattress

What do the users say?

Most users seem to like the durability of this bed - its metal frame is surprisingly durable and the mattress seems to hold up well.

Some seem surprised by how comfortable the mattress is, one user even noting that he thought it would feel like sleeping on “rolled up newspapers” but it was much better than that.

The set-up process seems to be a particular sore point as well as the amount of space it takes up. More than a few users have said that the amount of space it takes up when unfolded is much larger than indicated.

However, if you know this in advance it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

  • Easy to store when folded up
  • The construction feels very solid
  • Legs are stable
  • Lightweight and easy to move
  • Comfortable mattress suitable for tall people
  • The construction feels very solid
  • Setting it up can be difficult
  • Takes up a lot of space when unfolded
  • Probably too expensive for what it has to offer

For a rollaway bed, this one is quite luxurious. If you didn’t know better, you might even mistake it for a regular bed.

This is mostly because of the outstanding foam mattress that’s included with it – it’s only 5 inches thick, but you won’t notice it. It’s extremely comfortable.

The size is also decent – 38 by 75 inches with a height of 19. Most people will be able to fit on that comfortably. The mattress is also quite firm and resistant to repeated use so you won’t see any sagging any time soon.

The entire metal frame is well-constructed, and it seems like it will last for a long time, even if you use it often.

It has metal slats connected to the frame for additional support, and it can hold up to 250 pounds without a problem, but don’t test it with anything above 200.

When folded, it’s supposed to be 19 by 37.5 by 9.5 inches, which is an understatement – it ends up being quite a bit larger than that and a bit difficult to store.

Specifications

  • 5-inch memory foam mattress
  • Covering fabric on the base
  • Steel frame
  • 38 x 75 x 19 inches
  • Supports up to 250 pounds
  • Strap and hook for easy storage
  • 19 x 37.5 x 9.5 inches when folded

Zinus Memory Foam Resort Folding Guest Bed with Wheels, Standard Twin

What do the users say?

Unsurprisingly, most people who bought it praise the look of the bed and how it manages to fool their guests into thinking that they’re getting a full-size bed to sleep on. The comfortable mattress also helps with that as they say.

One of the users also noted that his 7-foot cousin comfortably slept on the bed, praising its size.

Still, even the positive reviews not the inconvenient side of that. It makes the bed difficult to properly store and some people just can't find enough space for it in their guest room.

Some larger users also mention that, despite its size, it isn’t able to support a lot of weight and they expected it would be so they feel shortchanged. Don’t make the same mistake they did.

  • Extremely comfortable mattress
  • Looks great
  • Fairly spacious
  • Highly durable mattress
  • Large when folded
  • Can only support up to 250 pounds

Milliard Diplomat Folding Bed

"Sleepsotight's pick for Best Rollaway Bed"

The size of this bed mostly fits the standard twin bed dimensions – 75 by 38 inches, with a height of 14 inches. When folded up, that becomes around 38 by 44 by 14 inches overall.

Most people should be able to fit comfortably on it, and it doesn’t end up being too difficult to store.

The mattress is fairly supportive and comfortable – it is 5 inches thick, which is quite standard. It can be a bit too firm though, so keep that in mind. At least that means it will last for a long time.

Moving it around and setting it up is not a big chore, but the initial assembly can be a bit difficult. The instructions are a bit vague and you might struggle with it, but everything after that should run smoothly.

The wheels luckily lock in place while you’re sleeping so you won’t wake up on the other side of the room or fall off.

Specifications

  • 75 by 38 by 14 inches when extended
  • 38 by 44 by 14 inches folded
  • 5-inch thick memory foam mattress
  • Steel tubing frame
  • Adjustable trident buckle
  • Lockable wheels
  • Supports 300 pounds

Milliard Diplomat Folding Bed – Twin Size - with Luxurious Memory Foam Mattress and a Super Strong Sturdy Frame

What do the users say?

Overall, this bed seems to be well-liked and most users are positive about it, noting how supportive the mattress is and how durable the overall construction is.

One user noted that he liked how the wheels are able to lock in place during sleep - something he had a problem with when using other similar beds.

However, there seems to be a flipside to how supportive the mattress is since some users found it too firm. For some it even hurt their back and it seems to be a question of how light or heavy you are.

Besides that, the only major problem seems to be the assembly - it’s difficult and can take a while. However, it is a thing you do once and then you’re done with it, so it’s not too problematic.

  • The mattress can withstand a lot and stay supportive
  • The wheels can be locked in place to prevent movement
  • Storing it is easy since it folds up well
  • Storing it is easy since it folds up well
  • The entire bed construction is made to last
  • Can be too firm for some people
  • The initial assembly is difficult due to poor instructions

This is quite an affordable rollaway bed, but it is by no means bad or poorly made. It’s clearly made out of sturdy steel, and the frame holds up well.

The size is decent, and an average person can easily fit on it – it’s 75 by 31 by 14 inches. Fairly spacious but not too large either.

When folded up the size is decent, and it’s 45 by 31 by 12 inches. It’s not small by any means, but it ends up being convenient enough to store, and it’s not larger than listed.

It’s supposed to be able to support up to 320 pounds, and it feels like it can. That’s more than enough for most people, and you won’t feel it sagging even if you’re over 200 pounds.

The mattress sis a bit on the thinner size though – only 3 inches. It might feel a bit uncomfortable.

There’s also no way to lock the wheels in place, and the bed might move around while you’re sleeping.

Specifications

  • 75 by 31 by 14 inches when extended
  • 45 by 31 by 12 inches when folded
  • Supports up to 320 pounds
  • 3-inch memory foam mattress
  • Metal frame

What do the users say?

Who most users praise here is the ratio of price to quality. It seems to be quite a good folding bed for the price and a lot of them expected it to fall apart after a few uses which is luckily not the case.

Most praise how easy it is to move, with one user even nothing that their child was able to wheel it around the house.

Some users seem to have a problem with the mattress being too thin and soft while the others seem to have the opposite issue - it’s too firm for them. There seems to be a definite 50/50 split on the issue and you might into the small middle who found it comfortable, but who knows.

One thing everyone can agree on, though, is that the mattress is quite thin.

  • The price is good for people on a budget
  • Moving it around is fairly easy
  • It doesn’t take up a lot of space in the house
  • Seems to be quite stable, even under a lot of pressure
  • Reasonably priced
  • Moves a bit when folded out
  • The mattress is too thin for comfort

Easily one of the most affordable rollaway beds you can find, this baby comes fully assembled, so you don’t have to bother with that.

But, does it hold up in other areas?

Well, it seems to be sturdy enough, it’s easy to store and wheel around the house when it’s needed, so it’s good enough to fulfill the basics of a rollaway bed.

The mattress is of standard thickness – around 5 inches – but it doesn’t seem to be too supportive and sags quite a bit.

The weight limit is realistically around 200 pounds – I wouldn’t sleep on it if I was heavier than that unless I wanted to risk it.

Overall, it’s a decent rollaway bed for the price, but it’s quite basic and doesn’t offer too much. Good for occasional use and for one average adult person or children.

Specifications

  • Twin-size bed
  • Metal frame
  • Comes assembled
  • 75 by 31.5 by 15 inches when extended
  • 5-inch memory foam mattress
Linon Verona Cot-Size Folding Bed, Multi-Color

What do the users say?

Most of the positive and negative reviews on this product seem to agree on one thing - you get what you pay for. Some just think it’s worth more than others.

The praise is mostly centered on how cheap the bed is and how compact it seems to be, while remaining fairly durable. It’s one of the high points of the product.

On the other hand, most also agree that the mattress is not too supportive and the bed doesn’t have a large weight capacity. Users that gave it positive reviews mostly weigh little or used the bed for their kids.

The general wisdom here seems to be - don’t buy it if you’re a heavier person, it’s not worth it in that case.

  • The bed comes pre-assembled
  • Moving it around is fairly easy
  • It doesn’t take up a lot of space in the house
  • Seems to be quite stable, even under a lot of pressure
  • Reasonably priced
  • The mattress isn’t supportive enough
  • It can’t hold much weight
  • The users have reported more than one faulty unit.

Probably one of the most compact standard folding beds around, it still holds up fairly well. It’s also incredibly affordable – the cost is less than a hundred dollars.

The frame seems to be fairly durable, and the mattress is firm enough but only 4 inches thick. However, the bed can’t support a lot of weight – even a 200-pounds person sleeping on it is risky.

The size is smaller than average – around 74 by 32 by 15 inches. It can easily fit a smaller adult person, but it’s certainly not big enough for taller individuals.

That does make it quite easy to move around though, and it weighs next to nothing.

In the end, you get what you pay for, and this is not a great rollaway bed by any means. However, if you’re on a budget and you intend to use this bed for kids or teenagers, it will fit the bill.

Specifications

  • 4-inch foam mattress
  • Metal mesh base
  • 75 by 31 by 15 inches when unfolded
  • Holds up to 240 pounds
  • Metal frame
  • Made in Italy
Keep on Rollin! We review the best Rollaway Beds on Amazon 4

What do the users say?

The main thing to note here is that most of the users who raved about this product used it for their kids - which makes sense. This is not a large bed and it can’t hold a lot of weight, as most agree.

Heavier people who tried to use it gave it the most negative reviews, highlighting the main issue with it.

However, the other positives that people listed, including the great price point and the low weight can make it quite desirable. It also seems to be easy to move as some users noted that they could lift it with one arm.

Overall, the consensus is that it’s a good budget bed for the kids, but not for much else.

  • It’s one of the most compact beds around
  • The price is just amazing
  • It doesn’t weight a lot so moving it is simple
  • The construction is good
  • Assembling it can be a huge chore
  • It’s much smaller than other, similar beds are
  • It doesn’t seem to be able to support a lot of weight

It’s quite spacious, fairly supportive and looks great when set up properly. Moving it around is easy, and it folds up nicely and doesn’t take too much space. In short, it’s everything a Roll away bed needs to be.
